The Velvet Queen

MOVIE RECOMMENDATION

I watched “The Velvet Queen” on an Air France redeye flight. I watched it subtitled with no audio—the former of which I had to do regardless as it was in French. Nonetheless, I don’t think I’ve ever been gripped as powerfully by a film.

The film follows two friends—a wildlife photographer and an author—as they spend weeks in the Tibetan plateau trying to capture images of the elusive snow leopard. The photographs and film they produced were stunningly beautiful, but it was their commentary that made the film special. Not unlike My Dinner With Andre, these gentlemen poetically and introspective debate the nature of man and his role in nature.

It was the most delightful of slow-burns and turned the standard shock-and-awe nature documentary format on its head. I highly recommend it!
